Still Death

No Mammals Allowed - this month we'll be focusing primarily on bird and reptile skulls. Some are very small, so bring a magnifying glas, or use one of ours!

Still Death (stilldeath.com) is a monthly education and art session in Portland, OR featuring a variety of real animal skulls! We start each 90 minute session with an educational presentation on some element of natural history, followed by ample time for participants to draw, paint, sculpt or otherwise create art using the skulls as references. Each month’s selection is unique, and focuses on comparative anatomy as an illustration of how different species have adapted to the pressures of surviving and thriving in the world we all share. Please note this is not an art class; like drop-in life drawing sessions, this is open to artists of all skill levels. 18+ only, please. $10/person, bring your own art supplies (no photography!)

Froud Workshop day 2

The Balance of Light and Dark; a Froud Sculpting Workshop.

WORKSHOP IS FULL

The time of the vernal equinox is a time to reflect on the balance between dark and light--leaving the darkness of winter and stepping into the lightness of spring.  It is a time of hope, new beginnings, and growth.

The workshop will begin with a meditation--acknowledging those beings that accompanied us through the dark winter months and meeting the new, young beings that will accompany us into spring and the time of greater lightness.  The meditation will give you at least two very different characters to use as a basis for a sculpted portrait-head and shoulders-of either the being of the winter months or the being of spring and new beginnings.

In this two-day workshop, Toby Froud and Wendy Froud (Realm of Froud) will teach the sculpting, painting, finishing, and aging techniques needed to complete a sculpted portrait bust.

April Coppini

Quiet Wild

Exhibition of April's charcoal drawings Nov 12 through Dec 11

I’ve gone from believing that there are two kinds of bees
(Honeybee and Bumble) to being completely awe-filled and astonished by the fact that there are somewhere around Four THOUSAND bee species on our continent alone.
The intricate web of creatures and growing things that makes up the support system that carries us and the rest of the planet through our daily lives is farmore intricate and interconnected than we could ever grasp.
Drawing especially, for me, is sort of a meditative act of reverence.
Beyond the form and details, I want to notice and capture the way it exists; how it moves in space, how it breathes, how the air is around it.
In Werner Herzog’s film “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” about the oldest found cave paintings (Chauvet Cave in France), one of the researchers theorized that the paintings (many of which are in charcoal) were done in a kind of ritual or spiritual awe and appreciation of the animals around them-beings that both gave them life and took it.
I love that idea; because I think when we bring the creatures around us inside, that both helps us understand them and our own place in the world..

Thomas the Rhymer

"And see not ye that bonny road,/ Which winds about the fernie brae?/ That is the road to fair Elfland, /Whereyou and I this night maun gae."

A shimmering woman on a white horse bedecked with silver appears to a poet who fell asleep beneath a Hawthorn, and she shows him three roads.

the road of righteousness, "thick beset with thorns and briars" . .

the broad, broad road of wickedness, "though some calls it the road to heaven" . . .

and the wild road to Elfland.

Join poet, herbalist, and witch, Sean Donahue, for an exploration of the ballad of Thomas the Rhymer, the nature of these three roads, and the meaning of the terrible gift the Queen of Elfland gives him for his service to her.

Sliding scale $30 - 50.   Space is extremely limited. To reserve your space, e-mail keeperofthegoodness@gmail.com

Renowned artist/author duo Brian and Wendy Froud present, for the first time, the backstory of Cottington Hall and its intriguing inhabitants: the Cottington family and the faeries living among them. The rise and fall of this eccentric British family gives us humorous, and sometimes tragic, glimpses into how the Cottingtons became inexorably entwined with the faeries during the late 19th and 20th centuries. When a descendant, Maddi, visits the Cottingtons s dilapidated hall, she finds herself caught up in a story of intrigue and mystery. While reading the letters and journals of her ancestors and discovering a wealth of inventions aimed at allowing humans to visit the fairy realm unharmed, Maddi slowly becomes aware of the faeries and their world.

Enjoy paintings from the original book, Lady Cottington's Pressed Faeries, as well as other pieces from the Froud family for sale and on display.
